Minneriya National Park is a national park located in the North Central Province of Sri Lanka. Originally declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1938, the area was designated a National Park on 12 August 1997. The reason for declaring this area a protected area is to protect the watershed of Minneriya Lake and the wildlife in the surrounding area.
